14 August 2026 Long Weekend: Who Gets 3 Days Off
Independence Day 2026 falls on a Friday, so the holiday runs straight into the weekend. For most people that means Friday 14, Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 August off, with work resuming Monday 17 August.
That is the short version. The longer version is messier: three days off holds for government offices and banks, but not for schools, which are on a different schedule entirely this year.
The notification
Independence Day on 14 August appears as a public holiday in the Cabinet Division’s annual holidays circular for 2026, issued in January. That circular covers federal government offices.
Provinces issue their own. Sindh has already done so — its Services, General Administration and Coordination Department declared Friday 14 August a public holiday across the province, covering government offices, autonomous and semi-autonomous institutions, corporations and local councils. Institutions providing emergency and essential services are exempt and operate as normal.
Banks: closed Friday to Sunday
Branches shut for public dealing on 14 August, followed by the regular Saturday and Sunday closure — three consecutive days, with counters reopening Monday 17 August.
For finance and admin staff: clear cheque deposits, salary disbursements, remittances and anything needing a branch visit before close of business on Thursday 13 August. ATMs, mobile apps and internet banking run normally throughout.
Schools: don’t assume Monday
This is where the long-weekend framing breaks down.
- Punjab — public and private schools are closed until 24 August. The Education Minister has explicitly warned administrations not to resume classes, examinations or any academic activity before that date.
- Sindh — schools under the School Education and Literacy Department are running on revised timings notified with effect from 6 August, and observe 14 August as a holiday.
- Azad Jammu and Kashmir — summer-zone institutions were notified closed from 10 to 13 August, running into the Independence Day holiday and the weekend.
If you are a school administrator, follow your own provincial department’s circular and nothing else. Forwarded screenshots are not notifications.
Private employers: usually yes, but check
This is the question that fills office WhatsApp groups every August, and the honest answer is that it depends.
The Cabinet Division circular binds federal offices; provincial notifications bind provincial ones. For private companies, whether 14 August is a paid holiday flows from the applicable provincial shops and establishments or factories legislation, your employment contract, and company policy. In practice the overwhelming majority of private employers close — but continuous-process manufacturing, hospitals, hospitality, retail, call centres and logistics frequently run through it, usually with holiday pay or a compensatory day off.
If you are drafting an attendance notice this week, cite the source in writing — “as per company policy” or “as per the applicable provincial notification” — rather than asserting a legal entitlement you have not verified. This is general information, not legal advice.
